Aly Shines in HVIAC Men's Tennis Championships
Sophomore Ahmed Aly (Astoria, NY) shined in the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) Men's Tennis Championships on Saturday, May 2. He teamed up with doubles partner, Alamine Alami - Binani (Hollis, NY) to compete in the number one doubles match. Aly and Alami –Binani defeated their opponent in the quarterfinals moving forward to the semi-final round. They would run into an experienced Culinary Institute team that would get the best of Aly and Alami- Binani, eliminating them from doubles competition.
Aly's semi-finals loss in doubles competition motivated him for the rest of the HVIAC Men's Tennis tournament. He would compete in the number four singles matches for the Vaughn Warriors. In the quarterfinals Aly defeated Conference Rookie of the Year, Matt Smith from St. Joseph's College, by a final score of 8-3. In the semi-finals, he played Nick Minichello who received a bye in the first round. Aly was down four games to three before making a comeback to win 8-5. In the championship round, Aly played Sebastien Rousseau who had dominated his early round opponents. Once again Aly found himself trailing in the match before rallying back to defeat Rousseau 8-4.
Aly became the first Warriors tennis player to win a flight in the HVIAC Men's Tennis Championships. After the tournament, he was named to the HVIAC All-Conference team. Aly has many accomplishments this season including being the HVIAC honorable mention player of the week for the last week of April, as well as being awarded the men's tennis player of the month for Vaughn College. His conduct on and off the court over the past two years has elevated the Warriors men's tennis program.
