QUEENS, N.Y. - The men's tennis team battled the Berkeley College (NY) Knights in the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) semifinals on Thursday, April 28. The two teams had an exciting finish when they met earlier in the regular season. Berkeley edged out the Warriors by a final score of 5-4 in their previous match-up.
The Warriors entered the HVIAC semifinals match as the number three seed with a 1-2 record in conference play and a 2-2 record overall. The Knights were the number two seed with a 2-1 record in conference play and a 3-8 record overall.
The Knights got off to a hot start winning both number one and number two doubles flights. Warriors duo Ahmed Aly (Astoria, NY) and Joel Haynes (Georgetown, Guyana) would respond winning their number three doubles flight by a final score of 8-3.
The Warriors trailed the Knights 2-1 heading into their singles matches. The men's tennis team competed valiantly but had difficulty securing wins. Ahmed Aly would be the sole Warrior to earn a victory over his singles opponent. The Warriors would go on to fall to the Knights 7-2 in the HVIAC semifinals.
The conference semifinal loss ends the Warriors' season with a 2-3 record overall. With most of the team returning next year, the Warriors will look to build upon the success they had in hopes for a deeper playoff push next season.
