Vaughn Warriors Women's Basketball Team Records First Win in Program History
On Thursday night in front of an energetic and supportive home crowd, Vaughn Warriors women's basketball team posted their first win in program history. It was homecoming night for the lady Warriors. At the end of the first half the women's basketball team held a 20-12 lead over King's College. With another half left of basketball to play, the Warriors still had a lot of work to do if they were going to close out the game and hold off King's for their first win in school history.
Freshmen center Aiysha Dunlap (Amityville, NY) pulled down a game high 27 rebounds and a game high seven blocks limiting King's opportunities to score the basketball. Dunlap played 39 minutes in the game and was a true force in the middle, clogging up the lanes for King's.
junior guard Mellissa Jastillana (Runnemede, NJ) led the Warriors in scoring, shootin5-12 from the field, finishing up with 10 points. Junior guard Francheska Rodgriguez (Bronx, NY) chipped in with five pts and had a game high three assists in what was a struggle for both teams to find open people and come up with points on the offensive end.
With less than eight minutes to go in the second half, King's made an offensive push to pull within four points of the lead. Ariel Mouser (King's) recorded 10 points in the game while Sophie Simunek (King's) had a game high 15 points. King's did not have enough offensive fire power. King's played with four players down the stretch after Alina Bonn picked up her fifth foul.
In the waning minutes and the game still undecided, senior forward Rochelle Brown (Bronx, NY) hit a huge jump shot for the Warriors to put King's chances of coming back out of reach.
Vaughn Warriors defeated King's 35-29 in what was a historical game for Vaughn College Athletics and the Women's Basketball Program.
